What we do

Diligent Finance is a financial simulation tool that models your financial life. Your plan is simulated in your browser. We store your project data so you can access it later.

We also publish free calculators, which work differently: they are not part of your plan and nothing you type into one is saved. See Using a calculator below.

Data we collect

• Project data: the financial information you enter, such as income, expenses, and loans. This is stored on our servers so your project persists between visits.
• Google account email: only if you choose to sign in with Google, so you can access your data from any device. We do not access your Google contacts, calendar, or any other Google data.
• Usage analytics: to understand how the app is used and improve it, we record which pages you visit and where you stop, together with some coarse context about your visit. That context is your browser and its version, your operating system, your screen size, whether you are on a mobile or desktop device, and a rough location (country and city) derived from your network address. We never learn your name from any of this, but it is linked to your project, so we treat it as your personal data. We record it under our legitimate interest in running and improving the service. You can turn it off at any time on the Profile tab, under Your usage. When it is off, we record no page-visit or drop-off data and no session for you.

Cookies and browser storage

We use no cookies at all: none for advertising, none for tracking, and none for anything else.

The simulator stores data in your browser, to keep you signed in, to remember your preferences, and to keep the app working across reloads and while you are offline. That means your browser's local storage and session storage, a small database (IndexedDB) holding any changes not yet saved to our servers, and an offline copy of the app's own files. All of it is limited to what the simulator needs in order to work for you.

The pages outside the simulator (the home page, the calculators and the showcases) store nothing in your browser at all. That is why they do not ask you for anything.

Data about other people

Your plan may include information about other people in your life, such as a partner or children (for example their age, or care and disability needs). You provide this so we can model your household's finances; it is stored as part of your plan and protected, kept, and deleted exactly like the rest of your data. If you are one of those people and want to know what a plan holds about you, please contact the person who created the plan, since we cannot find or remove your data without them.

Data we do not collect

• We do not collect your real name, postal address, or phone number.
• We do not collect bank account numbers, sort codes, or any real financial account credentials.
• We do not build a device fingerprint. We do not collect your device model, its memory, its processor details, or your network speed.
• We do not use advertising or third-party tracking, and we never sell your data or share it for anyone else's purposes. (The service providers who run the site for us, and any project you choose to share yourself, are described below.)

How your data is stored

Your data is stored in Microsoft Azure data centres in the United Kingdom. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2 or later) and at rest. Access is restricted to the application via managed identity credentials.

Who processes your data, and where

Two service providers process data on our behalf: Microsoft Azure, which hosts your data in the United Kingdom, and Cloudflare, a United States provider that routes traffic to the site and handles it in transit. If you sign in with Google, the sign-in is handled by Google in the United States; we receive only your email and a Google account identifier, under Google's own terms.

How long we keep your data

We keep personal data no longer than we need it. In short: a project you are using is kept while you use it; a browser-only project you never return to is deleted after 12 months (once your browser is cleared, nobody can reach it); usage analytics, feedback, and error logs are deleted after 12 months; and anonymous, aggregated statistics are kept indefinitely. If you sign in or save a recovery key, your project is durable and is kept until you delete it. You can delete everything at any time from the Profile tab.

Using a calculator

The free calculators (take-home pay, stamp duty, and the rest) are separate from the simulator, and nothing you type into one is kept.

The figures you enter are sent to our server to be calculated and the answer comes straight back. They are not saved and not added to your plan. We keep no record of what was calculated.

They are also sent inside the request itself rather than in the web address, which matters because web addresses reach our server logs while the contents of a request do not. So while you are using a calculator, nothing you type appears in the address bar, and nothing you type reaches our logs by that route.

If you move from a calculator into the simulator using the button on the page, your figures do travel in the link, in the part after the #. That part stays on your device: your browser never sends it to us, so it reaches no log of ours, though like any web address it is visible in the address bar and kept in your browser's own history.

Two exceptions, for completeness. If you open a calculator using a link that already has figures in it, for example one you bookmarked or someone sent you, those figures are part of the web address you requested, and that address is recorded in our server logs like any other. And if a request fails with an error, we record what was sent with it so we can diagnose the fault, which can include the figures from that request; those error records are deleted after 12 months, as described above.

We do record that a calculator page was visited and which controls were used, as described under Usage analytics above. That record never includes the figures themselves.

Using the app without an account

You can use Diligent Finance without signing in. An identifier is then stored in your browser's local storage. It is not your name and tells us nothing about who you are, but it is what connects you to your project, so we treat it as your personal data. If you clear your browser data, access to that project is lost.

Sharing a project

If you share a project using a share link, anyone with that link can make their own copy of it. A copy someone else makes is then their data, under their control, and deleting your original does not remove their copy. Treat a share link like a key: only share it with people you trust.

Your rights

You control your data directly from the Profile tab in the app:

• Access and portability: use Download your data to get a copy of the information you provided and the activity we observed, as a file you can save.
• Erasure: use Delete your profile to permanently erase your profile and all its projects. This deletes your data for good, not just hides it, and cannot be undone.
• Objection: use Turn analytics off, under Your usage, to opt out of the usage analytics described above.
